How to Choose the Right Reader Level for Your Child
Because the right book builds confidence and confidence builds readers.
One of the most common question we often receive is
“How do I know if this book is suitable for my child?”
Choosing the right reading level matters more than we often realise.
A book that is too difficult can discourage a child and make reading feel stressful.
A book that is too easy may feel comfortable, but it does not support growth.
Finding the just-right level helps children stay motivated, confident, and excited to read and that’s exactly what we want for every learner.
How to Tell if a Book Is the Right Level
Your child is reading at a comfortable level if they can read a book with:
✔ 90–95% accuracy
✔ A steady, manageable pace
✔ Basic understanding of the story
If your child is stuck on every other word or constantly guessing, the book is likely too hard at this stage.
If they breeze through a book with zero challenge, it may be too easy, and they might not be developing the skills they need to progress.
A Simple Test: The 5-Word Rule
Here’s an easy way to check book difficulty at home:
👉 Open any page of the book.
👉 Ask your child to read.
👉 If they struggle with 5 or more words on a single page, the book is too advanced for now.
This doesn’t mean you put the book away forever, just save it for later when their skills catch up!
Start Easy, Build Confidence, Then Level Up
Children learn best when they feel successful.
At TLA, we always emphasise:
Start with slightly easier books to nurture confidence.
Increase difficulty gradually as their fluency improves.
Use decodable readers if your child is still strengthening phonics skills.
When children experience reading success, they naturally develop the desire to read more and this motivation is far more powerful than pushing difficult books too early.
A Gentle Reminder for Parents
Confidence comes first. Accuracy comes later.
When children feel safe to attempt reading without fear of mistakes, they learn faster, take more risks, and enjoy the process much more.
